Mesopotamian Civilization

Hi, my name is Jai Naidu, and I'm 11 years old. I study at Suchitra Academy, where I enjoy learning new things daily. I am passionate about sports like badminton and cricket, and I also love playing the piano. But what excites me the most is science! I love exploring how the world works and learning about different scientific concepts. Whether through experiments, books, or videos, science always fascinates me. I believe in doing my best and having fun while learning.

What is PBL According to Me?👦👊

PBL stands for Project-Based Learning. In my opinion, PBL is an educational approach where students actively engage in real-world projects, allowing them to explore and learn about specific topics in-depth. It encourages collaboration, problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity, making the learning process both interactive and meaningful. With PBL, I have the opportunity to apply what I learn to a tangible project, like exploring the ancient world of Mesopotamia, instead of just reading textbooks. This way, I can create something more impactful, like a poster or presentation, that helps me understand the subject matter better.

Inquiry Name and How Is It Related to the Task👌👂

The inquiry for this project is titled "How do self and collective reflection drive improvement in our society and how can we become agents of this change? "

This inquiry is directly related to the task of understanding the various contributions of Mesopotamian civilization, such as writing, law, architecture, and agriculture. By investigating this question, I aim to uncover the lasting impact that Mesopotamians had on present-day culture, technology, and governance. The task helps me dive deeper into the civilization's achievements and explore how these early advancements laid the groundwork for the development of future societies, including our own.

 Research Question and Answer

Research Question: What were the major achievements of the Mesopotamian Civilization?

Answer:
The Mesopotamian civilization is renowned for several groundbreaking achievements, some of which have had a lasting impact on our world today:

  • Writing: The Sumerians developed cuneiform, one of the world’s first writing systems, which was used for record-keeping, literature, and law codes. This laid the foundation for modern communication and documentation.

  • Law Codes: The Babylonians, under King Hammurabi, created one of the first written legal codes, which influenced the development of justice systems worldwide.

  • Mathematics and Astronomy: Mesopotamians used a base-60 number system, still used for measuring time and angles today. They also made significant strides in astronomy, developing calendars and predicting celestial events.

  • Urbanization: The rise of cities such as Ur, Uruk, and Babylon marked the beginning of urban civilization. Mesopotamian cities were highly organized, with advanced infrastructure such as irrigation systems, roads, and public buildings.

  • Architecture: The iconic ziggurats and impressive city walls showed the architectural expertise of the Mesopotamians, influencing later building practices.
